Chaguanas: From Sugar Fields to the Busiest Street in Trinidad

How a sugar estate village became the commercial heartbeat of Trinidad.

Chaguanas does not have the postcard views of the north coast or the oil money of the south. What it has is people — more shoppers, more vendors, more life per square block than anywhere else on the island. Here is how a sugar estate village became the commercial heartbeat of Trinidad.

Named for the people who were here first

The name comes from the Chaguanes, one of the Amerindian peoples who lived in central Trinidad before Europeans arrived. When the Spanish and later the British divided the island into estates, this area became sugar country — flat, fertile, and worked by enslaved Africans and later indentured Indians. For most of its history, Chaguanas was a village surrounded by cane fields.

The market town that ate the countryside

Its position in the center of the island made Chaguanas the logical place to shop, do business, and catch transport in every direction. The cane fields gave way to housing developments, and the village main street became one of the busiest commercial strips in the Caribbean. In 1990, Chaguanas was formally made a borough. It is now the most populous borough in Trinidad and Tobago.

Divali Nagar: the festival that defines the town

Every October or November, Chaguanas hosts Divali Nagar — the largest celebration of the Hindu festival of Divali outside of India. For nine nights, the site fills with food vendors, clothing stalls, cultural performances, and thousands of deyas (clay oil lamps) lighting up the night. If you visit Trinidad once, time it for Divali Nagar.

The Indo-Trinidadian heartland

Chaguanas sits at the center of Trinidad's Indo-Trinidadian community. That heritage is everywhere: in the mosques and temples, in the music (chutney and chutney-soca were born in these parts), in the sweets shops, and in the food. This is the town where doubles was perfected.

What to see

The Divali Nagar site (visit during the festival in Oct/Nov). The Chaguanas main road — the busiest retail strip in central Trinidad. Price Plaza and Mid Centre Mall. The temples and mosques, some of the island's most beautiful.

Chaguanas is not trying to be picturesque. It is trying to feed you, sell you something, and get you where you are going — all at the same time. That is what makes it the real Trinidad.
